Chatback Response - Staff Work Arrangements

Thank you for your Chatback on staff work arrangements, and whether or not people are working when seen out and about and not at their desks.

It’s worth noting that the boundaries between working and not-working are probably a little harder to spot now. Work is quite fluid, and people don’t need to be sitting at a desk to be working – indeed staff could be on walking meetings, having a coffee whilst writing emails or marking work, or making critical phone calls whilst having a cigarette. All of these would be quite common and normal working behaviour. In addition, many of our staff are working very varied hours, with many hours worked outside traditional “office hours” – early in the morning, late into the night, and on weekends. Although in a typical 9 – 5 office set up it may look like any member of staff away from their desk isn’t working, at Marjon we encourage staff to work in a way that helps them to get the job done. (And of course, where we have concerns that any member of staff isn’t working to their hours or achieving their goals, we work with them on that, as any good employer would.)

That said, we do of course want staff to be available and the ways of contacting staff may have changed. We don’t think this question is about that specifically, but do please let us know if there is anything we could do to enable contact better.
